The Sound of a Room

Room tone isn't silence. It's the specific texture of a place at rest.

Every room has one — a fingerprint made of HVAC hum, the particular way concrete absorbs mid-range, the faint electrical presence of the building itself. When you record it, you capture something that can't be recreated after the fact.

Production mixers who take a good room tone at the top of every setup are worth their weight. The ones who don't are giving post a puzzle with missing pieces.

I've stitched together room tone from single-frame snippets more times than I can count. It works. It's not the same.
